Active Ingredients per 2-gram chew:
L-Glutamine and NAG
The amino acid L-glutamine is the primary fuel for the enterocytes of the small intestine and plays a key role in maintaining mucosal
cell integrity and gut barrier function. Glutamine can also support gut immune function. Various stressors – such as trauma, infection,
malnutrition, chemotherapy, and others – can impact the normal function of the enterocytes. Under certain circumstances, the body’s
tissues need more Glutamine than the amount supplied by diet and internal production, necessitating supplementation.
N-acetyl-Dglucosamine (NAG) promotes a healthy mucin layer in the stomach and intestines. Mucin protects the gut mucosa from potentially
harmful enzymes, bacteria, and changes in pH. NAG inhibits binding of bacteria to the gut mucosa and enhances the growth of
Bifidobacterium bifidum.
Two Probiotics
Saccharomyces boulardii is a non-pathogenic yeast that decreases intestinal permeability. In clinical studies, Saccharomyces boulardii
increased the production of secretory IgA, the first-line defense immunoglobin of the gastrointestinal tract. This beneficial yeast also may
be effective for occasional diarrhea. Bacillus coagulans (also referred to as Lactobacillus sporogenes) is a safe and effective probiotic that
needs no special handling and survives passage through the acidic stomach. It produces L(+) lactic acid in the intestines. This beneficial
bacteria is a spore-forming organism that remains dormant until exposed to acid in the stomach, thus assuring activity in the intestines.
Three B Vitamins
ThorneVet’s Gut Health Formula includes the tissue-ready form of Vitamin B12 – Methylcobalamin. Companion animals who have
inflammatory bowel issues have been shown to have reduced absorption of Vitamin B12. Oral supplementation of this tissue-ready form
of Vitamin B12 provides this important co-factor for many integral biochemical processes. Gut Health Formula also includes L-5-
Methyltetrahydrofolate (or 5-MTHF), a tissue-ready form of Folate that provides important support for optimal liver detoxification, as
well as cardiovascular health and nervous system function. Both Pantothenic Acid, also known as Vitamin B5, and Folate, also known
as Vitamin B9, help convert digested food, especially carbohydrates, into energy. The presence of Pantothenic Acid is also required for
breaking down cholesterol. These three B vitamins are included in Gut Health Formula because these B vitamins are often deficient in
cases of compromised nutrient absorption or poor digestive function.
Three Botanical Extracts
Slippery elm is a demulcent and emollient, providing soothing protection for the mucus membranes of the intestinal tract. It is helpful
in cases where the GI mucosa is irritated. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is well known for its ability to optimize mucus production
by gastrointestinal mucosal cells and to promote a healthy GI tract. Licorice root preparations have been used for many years for the
nutritional support of the stomach and duodenum. Quercetin is the most abundant dietary flavonoid with significant protection of the
gastrointestinal tract. A number of quercetin’s effects appear to be due to its antioxidant activity. Quercetin scavenges free radicals and its
antioxidant effects help promote a healthy inflammatory
