Safety of Grape Seed Extract

Question:

I bought your Small Animal Antioxident formula and wanted to double check that grape seed extract is ok for dogs. I thought grapes and raisins were toxic for dogs.

Also, my dog has kidney disease. is there anything in the Small Animal Antioxident formula that is harmful for this condition?

Hello Janice,
Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. It is not yet proven but thought that the toxicity of grapes lies in the grape skin not the whole grape. I have not heard of any reports that grape seed has caused any harmful side effects. I definitely caution owners against offering grapes and raisins as treats. Small Animal Antioxidant should be safe for your dog, but you may also try Renal Essentials for dogs by Vetri-Science to improve renal blood flow and aid with detoxification of the kidneys. Additionally, you may want to ask your veterinarian for a low protein diet or home cooked renal diet recipe to decrease the workload on the kidneys. Best of luck.
