Lipomas, III
Question:
Hi,
What is a good product for fatty tumors for a 11 year old sheltie.
Thanks,
Renee
Response:
Hello Renee,
Thanks for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. Fatty tumors or Lipomas are thought to be caused by a high or poor carbohydrate diet. The majority of dog food primary ingredients are corn and white rice. Lipomas can only be removed surgically, but changing the diet to a well balanced whole protein, whole grain (unless grain allergies) and healthy fat (olive oil), should help decrease new lipomas from forming.
Skin health can be supported with fatty acids, Ultimate Skin and Coat by NaturVet or Super EPA by Thorne are both excellent supplements for the skin. Canine Geriatric Basic Nutrients by Thorne may also be helpful for your older dog, to fill in the gaps left by a suboptimal diet.
Best of luck.
Sincerely,

Follow up question:
Hi,
I wanted to ask if I should be giving my 11 year old sheltie anything else. I have ordered the Super EPA and Canine Geriatric Basic Nuturient which you have suggested. Would he need the Small Animal Antioxidant/Immune due to his age? Thanks for your help,
Renee
Response:
Hello Renee,
The Small Animal Antioxidant has many of the same components as in the Canine Geriatric Basic Nutrients, so you don’t necessarily need to do both. The milk thistle and grape seed extract are not found in the nutrient but you may supplement them with S.A.T. by Thorne to support the liver. Super EPA, Canine Geriatric Basic Nutrients and a well balanced diet should maintain a high quality of life for your dog.
I would also recommend routine bloodwork and exams to identify any early issues as your Sheltie ages.
Sincerely,
Colleen Smith DVM, CVA
