Dog with Kidney Stones
Question
Hi,
My dog Randy is 12 years old and has just been diagnosed with a kidney stone. He is currently on Merrick dry and canned food, dinovite and a fish oil supplement. I have used Immugen in the past for some health issues he had with immune problems and have had great results. My vet has told me that I can give him the Renal Essentials along with the Cranberry Relief and I'm wondering if I should also use the Immugen again as well? Would this be ok, or would this be too much all at once? And do you have any other recommendations? I really want to avoid surgery if at all possible.
Thanks so much,
Leighann
Response
Hello Leighann,
Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. Yes, you may start your dog again on Immugen. It should not be an issue with the stones or with the other supplements you are offering. His diet is superior to most on the market but if the kidney stone is removed or passed, I advise having it tested for mineral content. Some stones are comprised of calcium oxalate and some from magnesium ammonium phosphate. These stones may be formed by the mineral salts in the diet, that the dog does not metabolize completely/properly.
There are many “home remedies” found on the internet for human kidney stones with some stating they have had good results. Several such as lemon juice and olive oil, apple cider vinegar or alfalfa tablets appear fairly inert as far as side effects or contraindications. I have not had a client try any of these popular remedies but they may be something to consider. Best of luck.
Sincerely,
Colleen Smith DVM, CVA |
