Cat with Heart Murmur
Question:
I have 2 cats. Katy 13 and Stanli 12, I just found out while having their teeth cleaned that both of them have heart murmurs. On a scale of 1-6 Katy is a 1 and Stanli is a 2. I am looking for a good vitamin/heart supplement. I have started already giving them Cod Liver Oil, CoQ10, Vitamin C and Hawthorne Berries, Along with a product that I have given them for years from Bio Nutrition BFSF3.

Response:
Hello Melinda,
Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. It’s a positive outlook at this stage that the murmurs are so mild. You are definitely treating your cats with the most essential supplements for cardiac diseases. Have your cats been tested for Hyperthyroidism, as that condition is common in older cats and manifests with cardiac abnormalities?
Though I’m not familiar with Bio Nutrition BFSF3, an excellent high quality supplement for geriatric cats is Nu-Cat Senior by Vetri-Science. It contains a formula of ingredients that supports digestive, immune, cardiac and overall well-being of the cats.
Most importantly the diet should be a high protein, moderate fat and a low carbohydrate well balanced diet. The proteins should be whole and not animal by-products or meals. I would also avoid grains and be sure the carbohydrates are not by-products such as brewer’s rice. Best of luck.
Sincerely,

Hi Colleen,
Tthank you so much for your email. In regards to the hyperthyroidism, what are the symptoms of that and can they be treated so that Stanli can still lead a healthy life.
Response:
Hello Melinda,
Since explanation of clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment is a long description, I am recommending you log on to the site www.thyroid-info.com/articles/cat-hyper.htm. They give an extensive explanation on diagnosis and treatment.
I also highly recommend you see a holistic or naturopathic veterinarian to discuss herbal or acupuncture support if you wish to pursue that path.
Sincerely,
