Diabetes, II
Question:
I need your help! A friend of mine with no internet access has asked me to do some research on diabetes in dogs. His 12 yr old male dog was just diagnosed with diabetes. He was told by the local vet that the dog will require insulin shots. My friend is very upset that his dog is sick and is concerned he will not be able to afford to purchase insulin shots for his dog.
Can you tell me if there is any holistic or alternative treatment that might be effective and less costly or less intrusive than insulin shots?
Thank you for your time!
Kim M.
Response:
Hello Kim,
Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. Canine diabetes is similar to human Type I where it is defined as impaired insulin synthesis or secretion and/or decreased sensitivity of receptors to the effects of insulin. Unfortunately this is usually seen in older dogs and is can be concurrent with Cushings Disease. This is not as commonly seen as with feline diabetes, which is more similar to the Type II and is primarily weight dependent.
Canine patients can be supplemented with Glucobalance by Pet Alive to help the body utilize insulin effectively and help control blood glucose levels. High protein, low carb and moderate fiber and fat can also improve the blood glucose control.
The most important concern is that canine diabetes absolutely must be controlled with insulin. Insulin is the only way to regulate the dogs blood glucose and maintain a high quality of life. Hopefully your friend can work closely with his veterinarian to possibly order the insulin at a reduced cost. Best of luck.
Sincerely,
Colleen Smith DVM, CVA
