Catnip and Contact Dermatitis?
Question:
Can cats be allergic to catnip or get contact dermatitis from rolling around in catnip?
Response:
Hello Sandy,
While animals and people can develop allergies to just about anything, I’ve never seen an allergy that I could relate to catnip. There are some reports that it may cause vomiting or diarrhea, but I’m not sure about contact dermatitis since the cat’s hair coat should protect the skin from the herb leaves.
I would recommend eliminating the catnip for 2 months and see if the dermatitis resolves, if not, it’s not the catnip. Best of luck.
Sincerely,
Colleen Smith CVM, CVA
