Autoimmune Disorder

Question

My dog Savanna has recently been diagnosed with an autoimmune problem, her immune system is attacking itself. She is an 80 lb. mixed breed of basically German Shepard,Aust. Shepard, Rotti and who knows what else!  :) They have run a full panel of blood work. So far everything has come back normal, kidneys, liver. We are waiting on Valley fever to come back (we live in Arizona, very big out here in dogs). Anyway as of two days ago she has started treatment with 20 mg Prednisone 2 tablets every 12 hrs. and 50 mg.Azathioprine, 1 and 1/2 every 24 hrs. She seems a little better, her breathing is slower and calmer. She is very tired. Anyway, what can you recommend I can give her to help her that won't interfere with theese meds.I'm a firm believer in natural way. My two dogs are my babies. I am beside myself. Can you help??

Response

Hello Suzanna,

Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. There are many different autoimmune diseases with many different clinical signs. It would help to know if it's her skin (lupus), Gastrointestinal (IBD), blood (hemolytic anemia) or any others, to help me give you supplemental information.

In general you may offer your dog Immugen by Thorne, which helps "balance" her immune system no matter what it is attacking. Prednisone and azathioprine both suppress the immune system but also have tremendous side effects. Cell Advance by Vetri-Science or Small Animal Antioxidant by Thorne are both also excellent powerful antioxidants that promote cellular energy. They may help her system rebalance as the prednisone is tapered off. These supplements should not be a problem with the immune suppressant medications. Best of luck.

Sincerely,
Colleen Smith DVM, CVA
