Taurine, a sulfur-containing amino acid, is essential for cats and conditionally essential for other animals. Taurine is the most abundant amino acid in the heart and has been shown to improve nitric oxide production in the vascular endothelium, which is essential for optimal blood flow, maintaining healthy blood pressure, and overall cardiovascular functioning. Taurine acts as an antioxidant as well, inhibiting LDL-cholesterol oxidation. Studies have shown that cats deficient in taurine can develop cardiomyopathy.

Taurine is involved in a number of physiological processes, including bile acid formation for fat digestion, fluid regulation, detoxification of environmental toxins, and regulation of cellular calcium and nerve excitability. The liver combines bile acids with taurine, which results in increased cholesterol solubility and excretion. Animals deficient in taurine are more likely to be susceptible to tissue damage from environmental pollutants.
