Tips for Brushing your Pet's Teeth

Brushing your pet's teeth is one of the most important steps you can take to prevent oral diseases.

Here are some suggestions for making this somewhat difficult task less difficult:

  1. Start brushing at an early age so your pet gets used to the procedure. Make the brushing sessions short and don't over restrain your pet. Keep calm and use a soothing voice, providing lots of praise to your pet.

  2. For the first few attempts, dip your finger into a liquid that your dog or cat likes -- tuna water or beef broth -- and then rub your finger over their teeth.

  3. Next try placing a small piece of gauze over your finger and gentle scrub their teeth in a circular motion.

  4. Finally, try a soft bristle toothbrush and toothpaste designed for pets. (These can be purchased at most pet stores.) Don't use toothpaste designed for humans as they can upset a pet's stomach. <

  5. Gently massage their gums with the toothbrush, being careful to brush at the gumline where food can get trapped and plaque begins to develop.

  6. Have your veterinarian perform a thorough dental exam at every checkup.
