Vaccines – Introducing a New Puppy to an Older Dog

I have a 4 yr old boxer who has had all his puppy series vaccines and the rabies shot but he has not had any shots since he was a yr old.  He has to go in for his rabies shot next week.   Is there anything I can give him to help him through that period?

Also I am getting a Pug puppy in December.  Will my boxer be ok around a puppy since my boxer has not had any more vaccines since he was a yr old.?

Hello Yolanda,

You may start your dog on an immune support supplement such as Immugen by Thorne or Immunity and Liver support by PetAlive. They should both sustain your boxer’s immune system when you introduce the new puppy. You may want to have distemper and parvo titers tested when you go to your vet for the Rabies vaccination. That should at least show if your Boxer’s Immunoglobulins are protective or not.

Depending on where you are rescuing the Pug from, you should at least take the puppy to be evaluated for respiratory signs, intestinal worms and skin issues before acquainting the two dogs. Best of luck.

Sincerely,
