Suggested Diet for Dog with Food Allergies

My 10 year dog has hot spots, itching skin, she eats at her paws, back and other spots. She rubs her face on the rug. We believe that it is a digestive problem that makes her skin itch. You have a product Immugen by Thorne. Would this be the best or do you have another product?

Hello,

All of the symptoms you have described are primary indicators of a food allergy. The most important modification you need to make is the diet. I highly suggest finding a new diet that does not contain chicken, beef, corn, white rice, wheat and soy. These ingredients are the most common allergens for dogs, which ideally should be replaced with a novel protein and carbohydrate diet. Novel foods have ingredients that the dog has never eaten before and may likely not trigger an allergenic response. Food dyes and preservatives also should be avoided as they also can cause allergenic reactions.

Dog treats and table food is also included in the diet adjustment otherwise the new diet will not be effective. Several diets you may try are EVO, Innova, Natural Balance and California Naturals. There are many alternative protein and carbohydrate diets available, so just be sure to read the ingredient list for the proper nutrients.

Immugen and Gastriplex by Thorne will both be ideal during the diet change and will help the immune system deal better with the hypersensitivity. Best of luck.
