Lilly has had a UTI infection off and on since March of this year. Now the doctor has her on Science Diet CD and a medicine called Cipro 500 mil. for 30 days! Why for 30 Days? Isn’t that a bit much for such a powerful drug? I have read the side effects of Cipro and I am concerned? What do you suggest would be the right thing to do?
Hello,
Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. Yes, Ciprofloxacin for 30 days is a long period of time, but it may depend on if they did a culture on the urine. Urine cultures will show what bacteria are in the urine and the antibiotics that work against them. You may ask your vet if you can give the antibiotic for 14 days and then recheck the urine. If it is clean then you should be able to discontinue the antibiotics.
UTI-free by PetAlive is a very effective homeopathic that improves and maintains the health of the bladder and urinary tract. It may be good to try if your pet has a non-responding infection.
The Science diet CD diet is primarily used for crystals in the urine. Please ask your vet if that was the case, otherwise it is not necessary to change the diet to CD. Best of luck.
