Dog with Tooth Abscess

My dog Annie is a beagle.  I thought she had an abscess tooth.  My vet put her on antibiotics for a month. 250 mg per pill 2 times a day.  This concerns me regarding her health. Is there something else I can do? Or once she is off the antibiotics what can be done to build her immune system back up? Thank you. Debra

Hello Debra,

If your beagle truly has an abscessed tooth, it really needs to be removed. A tooth root abscess compromises the ligaments and bone, so the infection will most likely return. A dental x-ray should show how much bone is affected and if any neighboring teeth are also affected.

You may try Immugen by Thorne to support the immune system. Please keep in mind that oral bacteria have an affinity for heart valves, therefore routine dental cleanings will maintain oral and organ health.

Probiotics such as Vetri-Probiotics BD by VetriScience and Omega 3 fatty acids such as Super EPA both should also help with immune support. They equally are anti-inflammatory and immune boosting and are recommended life long. Best of luck.

Sincerely,

Colleen Smith DVM, CVA
