Dog with Pyometra (Uterus Infection)

I was just told by my vet that my 8.5 year old Yorkie has Pyometra (uterus infection). She has other health issues such as extremly bad knees and she is barely able to walk without medication. She was never spayed. She has vomited a few times in the last few days, had no appetite and is very lethargic. She also has vaginal discharge.

What can you suggest and how fast can I get it shipped?  Thanks so much.

 Hello,

A pyometra is a serious condition. If it’s an open pyometra (the cervix has not closed) then antibiotics and pain medication should help it resolve. If it is a closed pyometra (the cervix has closed) the infection will kill the dog. This is an absolutely grave condition. Your dog must be spayed to remove the infected uterus.

The fact that she has vomited, has no appetite and is very lethargic is not a good sign. I would seriously consider having her spayed. The infection can spread to the kidneys because they share the same blood supply.

At this time, I recommend having her closely monitored by your vet. If you have her treated and she recovers Immugen will help her immune system, as she grows older. Glyco-flex II for small dogs should also help reduce the pain and inflammation in her knees.  Best of luck.

Sincerely,

Colleen Smith DVM, CVA
