Dog with Hypothyroidism

I have a 8 yr old Boxer/Pit-Bull mix who was diagnosed with hypothyroidism few years ago. Other than the thyroid issue and some light arthritis he is in good health, maintains a weight of around 68-72 lbs and is active. He takes .5 mg of Soloxine twice a day for the thyroid condition.

He eats Wellness Core food and I add a squirt of liquid 100% salmon oil and K9 Health Liquid Chondroitin/Glucosamine to his breakfast and dinner.

I am noticing that his hair is thinning more and more in his lumbar areas, about the same amount of hair loss on both sides of this hips. I know that this is a common symptom of hypothyroid – but am looking for any additional supplement or additive I could give him to help prevent the hair loss. Or something to promote new hair growth?

I came across the Thyro-pet on the website and am curious if this may help.  Also curious if this would be ok to give with the soloxine he is currently on. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. You may offer the Thyro-Pet while he is on the Soloxine. It should not have side effects with the thyroid medication, but the blood levels should be checked every few months when starting a new supplement.

You may also consider having your dog checked for concurrent Cushings disease. It is not uncommon to have both hypothyroidism and Cushings disease as they are both endocrine disorders and both effect the hair coat.

Also, for the hair and coat, you may offer Skin and Coat Tonic by PetAlive. It contains spirulina that has protein to support the skin and additional herbs that contain minerals that improve hair growth. Best of luck.
