Diabetic Dog Doing Well on GlucoEnsure – Diet Suggestions

I have a diabetic Maltese that has been taking GlucoEnsure and eating Wellness Core instead of the Purina prescription like you advised for over a year now and he is doing great.  I couldn’t get his sugar regulated before that.  My non holistic vet said whatever I am doing to keep doing it.  He also takes Cataplex and Diaplex from a local holistic vet.  Anyway, I started feeding all of my babies Wellness Core because it’s easier to purchase just one food and I want them to have the best and be healthy..they seem to love it, but it’s so expensive.  I know I have to keep my diabetic dog on it, but I was wondering if you could recommend another holistic food for my other two babies that is a little more reasonable.  One is a four year old pom and the other is an 11 year old shih-tzu/peke mix.  There has to be something that is good for them that is not $2.79 a can? Please advise.

Hello,

Glad to hear your Maltese is doing so well on the GlucoEnsure. You may be able to offer “Natural Balance” or “Fresh Pet”, which is sold in some grocery stores as a refrigerated roll. There are also some co-op type stores that sell “Call of the Wild” dog food that is quite good.

Sometimes you need to weigh the benefits of the better diet with any health problems in the future. Best of luck.

Regards,

Dr. Smith
