Cat with Large Mass on Liver

My 9-year-old Persian has been in excellent health until two weeks ago where through a routine exam a mass was discovered. After X-rays, sonograms, an aspiration of the fluid was performe, a very large mass measuring  6.5 cm was discovered on what looks like the entire left lobe of his liver. No malignancy has been found through the fluid.

Surgery was scheduled and then the surgeon told me that she rather not. She felt that my little guy could lose his life on the table…so at this time he was sent home. He shows no signs of illness at this time.

I feel so very helpless!!!  Can you please provide any holistic remedies at all to either shrink the cyst or slow it growth process?? Please I need to feel I can do something.

Hello Kim,

Since there was no malignancy found in the fluid there are several possibilities, feline cholangiohepatitis, toxic hepatitis, cancer or even liver lobe torsion.  A few supplements that can help any of these conditions are Immunity and Liver Support by PetAlive which contains milk thistle to help restore liver function and SAT by Thorne which contains tumeric to help slow the growth of cancers.

Small Animal Antioxidant by Thorne should also help his immune system to combat any disease. Please also be sure that he is on a good quality protein diet, low to no grain with a moderate amount of fat, and no preservatives or food dyes. Since the liver is the body’s detoxifier, a good quality diet places the smallest amount of burden on the liver. Best of luck.

Sincerely,

Colleen Smith DVM, CVA
