Cat with IBD – Digestive Enzymes may Help

We’ve been consistently giving our cat Gastriplex but she still throws up every few weeks.  Sometimes undigested food and sometimes digested food.  After loosing one cat from Ibd (well, actually FIP – but he had been very bad wtih IBD and took steroids which I believe killed his cell mediated immune function and allowed FIP to get in there and kill him), we get really scared when our cat starts throwing up.  Are there any other products that may help?  thanks.

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. The first question is what is your cat eating? IBD is an allergen responsive disease; therefore your cat’s diet can worsen or heal the condition. Cats are true carnivores so a good quality protein, moderate fat and no to low carbohydrates is the ideal diet.

The vomiting is a response to an irritation in the gastrointestinal system so finding the cause can decrease that reaction. Dry food contains much more carbohydrates so changing to a good quality wet food only diet can often eliminate the vomiting.

With a change in diet you may also add a digestive enzyme to the diet to ease the digestive process. Animal Essentials Plant Enzymes may be better alternative to a probiotics only supplement. I would also recommend visiting a holistic vet to discuss the best nutrition strategy for your cat. Best of luck.
