Cat with Hyperthyroidism – Diet and Immune Support

My 12 year old cat has a decreased white cell count due to methamazole for her hyperthyroidism.  The vet is having me cut her dosage in half to increase the white cell count but I am looking for an additional natural way to help boost her immune system.  Not sure which item which benefit her more. Your time is appreciated.  Thank you

Hello Susan,

There are several things you may try to support your cat’s immune system. Immugen by Thorne helps support the white blood cells by enhancing their production and protecting the organ systems. Also, essential fatty acids (fish oils) are very immune supporting and anti-inflammatory.

I highly recommend placing your cat on a very high quality protein diet, felines are true carnivores and we see more metabolic diseases when they eat high carbohydrate diets. They should be on high protein, moderate fat and low/no carbohydrate/grain diets. Most do better on wet diets with the two of the first three ingredients being a whole protein. Avoid “by-product” meats, preservatives, food dyes and grains such as corn, white rice and wheat. Better nutrition always decreases inflammation, which is the precursor of any disease. Your cat will be able to better maintain better health with the secondary issues of hyperthyroidism. Best of luck.

Sincerely,

Colleen Smith DVM, CVA
