Cat with Digestive Problems – Look at Diet First

I started my cat on Gastriplex about a week ago.  For about 5 days he was getting better.  I did not change anything I fed him in anyway.  Then on the 6th day his stools became very soft again, and, now he has the diarrhea back.

We have done everything for him over this 8 month period - antibiotics, steroids, every test there was and nothing was abnormal.

I was so hopeful when he showed improvement right away with this product. Now he won’t eat it in his food.  Refuses to eat the food at all when I put the product in his food so I give him a whole capsule in the morning with no problem. We are to the point of having him put to sleep.  Do you have any words of wisdom?

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. The first approach for your cat should be a nutrition re-evaluation. If he is on prescription Science Diet or Purina, I would recommend to immediately place him on a good quality protein diet with no grains and a moderate amount of fat and fiber. Completely eliminate preservatives, food dyes, corn and meat by-products from the diet. Since his blood work is normal, it appears he may have a food intolerance or hypersensitivity which often does not respond to steroids.

You may try adding canned pumpkin or a bentonite clay supplement to slow down the motility in the colon. Optagest with digestive enzymes and FOS which feed healthy colon bacteria may also help his body better metabolize his diet.

If you haven’t taken him to see a holistic/acupuncture veterinarian, I highly suggest another opinion. Acupuncture, eastern herbs and additional food therapy may be what he needs to turn him around before you make a final decision. Best of luck.

Sincerely,

Colleen Smith DVM, CVA
