Puppy Stools

Question:

My female dog, Fyre, started having clear mucous bowels this morning, and it concerned me. Is this normal, and should I definitely be concerned? She is 8 weeks old, by the way. I can hear her bowels and know exactly when she needs to go out to potty.

If there is anything I can do for her immediately, short of taking her to the vet, I would be most appreciative.

Thanks in advance.
Scott M.

Answer:

Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. There are a few crucial questions since your puppy is so young.

  • Had she had her first vaccinations? Parvo is very contagious and deadly and is first usually seen as diarrhea and lethargy.
  • Has she been dewormed? Intestinal parasites can often cause bowel changes as well as increased intestinal sounds.
  • Have you changed her food or treats recently? Puppies can dehydrate very easily and food changes will commonly result in a change in stool consistency.

Since your puppy is so young I would recommend at this time to take her to her vet. They often can’t tolerate intestinal issues without becoming very sick, very quickly. Best of luck.

Sincerely,
Colleen Smith DVM, CVA
