Chronic Vomitting
Question:
I have a silky terrier that has a chronic vomiting problem. He gives you no warning just vomits constantly. I have had him to several vet offices and they have found nothing wrong with him. Can you suggest anything to help him. I have tried pepto, pepcid, etc. but he vomits that up also. Do you have anything that would be a liquid drop in his mouth?? Thanks for any help you can give.
Thanks,
Kim W.
Answer:
Thanks for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. Unfortunately, since I don’t know what test your previous vets have run it is difficult for me to evaluate your terriers’ chronic illness.
- Have they tested for a liver shunt, cardiac problems, pancreatitis or a mass obstruction?
- Does he vomit food after eating or just yellow bile…what time of day is this happening?
- Does this happen while he sleeps?
Has your vet given him an injectable anti-vomiting medication and if so did it help? If it didn’t help he may likely have an obstruction which means he will never keep anything oral down unless it’s resolved. I highly advise being referred to an Internal medicine specialist to rule out my above questions.
If there is still no cause found, the only other thing I can recommend is to seek a holistic practitioner and discuss possible food allergy issues. Food allergies don’t normally manifest primarily as vomiting because your terrier can’t keep anything down in the first place. At this point if your terrier can drink water with out issue, I would blenderize his food into a slurry so he at least can receive some nutrition. This is a serious problem that pepto, pepcid or anything else given orally are not indicated for. Further diagnostic tests and possible surgical exploration are highly warranted; the CAUSE of the vomiting is crucial to be able to resolve this problem. Best of luck.
