Addison's Disease
Question:
Have you any advice on what supplements to give a dog that has Addison's Disease? She is on several supplements for glandular ad kidney function but I was curious if you thought adding DHEA to her supplement regime would help? Or if you could suggest a product here on this website.
Thanks so much for your time and help, She's my most beloved sunshine.
Sincerely,
Teresa
Answer:
Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. Addison’s disease is a serious condition to monitor regularly with your veterinarian and preferably refer with a holistic practitioner. The cause of Addison’s is unknown but it is generally considered to be associated with an immune system problem. Cancer of the lymphatic system or systemic infections has been related to the problem as has over use of/or sudden withdrawal from steroids. Is your dog currently on synthetic cortisol?
Several issues should be considered: Diet – foods with excess potassium should be avoided. High quality easily digested protein should be included. Supplementation of the immune system is important due to the inability of the adrenals to excrete cortisol; which affects the strength of the immune system. Immugen and Moducare are two exceptional supplements that maintain the immune system. A homeopathic approach to consider is Arsenicum, with Licorice, borage leaf and Siberian Ginseng as recommended herbal treatments.
I would not consider DHEA, it is a hormone produced primarily in the adrenal glands that is converted in to male and female hormones. It is not a beneficial supplement for a disease that primarily lacks corticosteriod production.
